Empowering local promoters of natural resource management

Leaving the management of natural resources at the hands of local communities has been proving to be a good strategy at Primeiras & Segundas. Community members monitor the no-take zones in the Moma estuary and the results have been extremely positive, increasing fish yields and specie diversity. Mangrove replanting initiatives have been successful, raising awareness of the importance of mangroves and their role in reducing the risk for disasters.

Partnering with locally established organizations is key to influencing networks, understanding the situation and avoiding reinventing the wheel, or creating solutions not relevant for the local environment.

Rural development relies on the supply chains necessary to bring goods, people, and infrastructure to and from remote locations. A combination of informal and formal networks are required to give redundancy and resilience against the failure of any one transportation channel.

Tea is the world's 2nd most consumed beverage, trailing only water in terms of global per capita consumption. It a hardy and drought resistant crop that requires minimal processing to be come a high-value crop. New models of tea production that are premised on decentralized, biodynamic and cooperative practices are transforming the industry.

Tailor learning experiences to the local level

The association aims to educate and support the population through ways that are appropriate to them, through local methods and solutions such as 'tent schools' set up to teach environmental protection practices, and mobile vans used to meet and educate local herders. The association believes that fostering local motivation is the best way to make long term environmental protection.
